One of the requests by 6th grade parents this year was to have something where parents could get to know each other – especially parents new to Denny. We’re hoping that by inviting 5th grade parents, they will feel more included at the beginning of the school year and not so overwhelmed.

Light appetizers will be served and Marty McLaren, Denny alum and School Board rep will be attending as well.

School will be dismissed at 12:35pm at all Seattle Public Schools on Tuesday, January 24th as teachers and other staff represented by the Seattle Education Association will be taking a half-day of furlough time.

This loss of instructional time is a result of a difficult budget situation at Seattle Public Schools. Both the District and the SEA, the teachers’ union, agree that furlough days are the best way to minimize the impact to our students and prioritize classroom funding.

Students who receive bus transportation will receive rides home on January 24th three hours early, after lunch.

Please note: The January 24th date is not on the District wall calendar. We are notifying families now to ensure you have time to plan.
Additional furlough days will be held when school is not in session and will not directly impact school days for students and families.

The Mayor’s Office, in partnership with Seattle Schools, Alliance for Education, and Get Schooled, is running an exciting city-wide campaign to encourage students to get to school. Launched on October 3rd, the mission of Be Here Get There is to increase focus and awareness on the important link between school attendance and a student’s future success. As the school year progresses, schools, classrooms, and individual teachers and students will be awarded various prizes for the most improved attendance. Every day in school matters. At Sanislo, our most improved attendance award has gone to Mr Apostol’s 5th grade class for both October and November! They have won a trophy, pizza party and free prizes for each student for increased attendance each month.

For more information, please visit http://www.getschooled.com/seattle

With traveling over the winter break and visiting family and friends and general high rioting and revelry, you or someone you love may have inadvertently picked up a case of head lice. I highly recommend that all families regularly perform weekly head lice checks at home every week. I would like this weekly check to become the normal culture for our community.

Lice do not discriminate! They will crawl onto clean heads, dirty heads, white, black, yellow, pink, green and purple heads. Heads with short, medium or long hair, heads with straight hair or large curls or small curls. Every family needs to check every person in the family every week for these creepy crawlers. If found, please treat according to trusted recommended treatments. You could consult your doctor, your pharmacist, your public health department, or your school nurse (me!). Also, inform any families or friends that have been in recent close contact, so they can check and treat if needed. Please inform the school of the recent treatment. Your information will be kept confidential. Thank you very much for your kind attention to this informative message & keep on checking! -Jacquie Bowen, RN, BSN, School Nurse

The Mothers of the Hispanic Family Committee of the Sanislo PTA sponsor a cupcake and popcorn sale every friday in front of the school. It’s very popular, and gives us all a very nice social event after school on Fridays. A regular group of women do all of the shopping and preparations for this sale, and they can use more help. You can help by joining them to frost the cakes and pop and bag the popcorn in the staff lounge at 2:45 on Fridays. You can also help by contributing some baking supplies. There is a box in the hallway near Mr. Seevers’ office, please add cake mixes, cupcake cups, frostings etc. to the box; it will save them a trip to the market.
