Books for Summer Reading!
Monday morning I learned that The Seattle Public Library Foundation has found a way to send up to 2000 in books our way in time for summer reading! Wow! We’ll save some for our library, some for classroom collections….and many, many for Sanislo students to take home! They’ll first be made available at our May 31st Family Literacy night, then again with the last week of school.

Scholastic Book Fair Is 3 Weeks Away
The last week of May we will be holding another Scholastic Book Fair, and the library is looking for parents to help staff the sale. We will set up mid-day on Tuesday May 29th and open for business from 3:30-4:15pm on Tuesday-Friday, and 8:30-9:30am on Monday-Friday, in addition to being open for the evening Family Literacy event. If you (or a talented teenage sibling) can spare an hour or two to help, please contact Mr. Seasholes in the library. The sale brings books and income to the library to keep Sanislo readers growing!

As National Poetry comes to a close, I want to repeat the invitation to students and families to submit poems for our Sanislo Chinook 2012 Poetry Anthology. Take a moment to pen a family poem and send it in, by email if you like clseasholes@seattleschools.org before May 15th.

For Sanislo’s Cinco de Mayo festivities, I wondered if talented Sanislo friends might like to join me for a little musical sharing to add to the program’s potluck. Ricardo Lopes-Alcantara suggests I assemble a few friends and try to present these two songs along with what the students are singing. They are best done by one or two adults…and so I humbly go looking for help: Quieres cantar conmigo? Connocerlos?

El Sinaloense:

and Cocula:

are both lively traditional songs….and I’d love to learn ‘em: with you.

Thanks and Thanks Again

The Puget Sound Council for the Review of Children’s Books donated a box of just-reviewed, new books to our library last week. Do the math, at $17/book the 30+ books represent a real boost to our collection. Thanks also are due to the various individual donors who continue to surprise and delight me with book donations large and small, new and used…all of which get into circulation ASAP.

On Wednesday April 11th, right in the middle of National Library Week, Sanislo will celebrate “Library Snapshot Day” in conjunction with similar events at scores of public, K12 and academic libraries throughout Washington State. Part celebration, part business as usual: it is a chance to invite special guests, take a few snaps, collect patron (and parent) comments, and to share what a remarkable resource our libraries are. In my role as ringleader for K12 librarians, I invite you to look at http://walibrarysnapshot.wikispaces.com to see what Snapshot is all about and make plans to help Sanislo celebrate “a day in the life of our library.”

Thursday May 31st brings our 3rd evening Family Literacy event at Sanislo this year as we read, write and share poetry with a family celebration from 6-7:30pm. Bringing together student work with SAL’s Writer-in-the-School program, the Washington Reading Corps family literacy efforts and the publication of Sanislo student poetry anthologies this is one to put on family calendars now.

That same week of May 29th-June 1st will see our “Get Ready for Summer” Scholastic Book Fair in the library, bringing great deals on books while supporting our school library ongoing growth and development.

Sanislo student poets are also invited to read their poetry from the Elliott Bay Book company’s author stage at a second annual Youth Poetry Celebration on Saturday, June 1st from 11am-1pm. Joining Sanislo will be student poets from the Powerful Writers program in the Rainier Valley and poets from Lake Washington Girls Middle School in an unforgettable encore event. Student poets can experience the joy of intimate, public performance from one of our nation’s busiest author reading stages.. Families and friends invited: more info @library.

Mark your calendars now for our third family literacy night event on Thursday May 31st, celebrating poetry and literacy in conjunction with our SAL Writer-in-the-School Ann Teplick. Student poets inspired to share will also be able to work with Ann in presenting the following Saturday June 2nd as we join others in the second annual Student Poet celebration at Elliott Bay Books. We’ll be e-publishing our Sanislo student poetry anthology again this year in celebration of April’s National Poetry Month.

With books like Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and Michael Morpurgo’s Warhorse going from print-to film, I am encouraging students take a look at the 2012 Oscar-winning short film, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” by Wm Joyce. Here the short film came first, the iPad app second and the print book will follow in the coming year. I invite everyone to enjoy it, posted here:

eBooks and ePublishing are exciting new players in the library, and I hope to generate interest and some initial funding for ebooks in our Sanislo collection through a Follett “Titlewish” donation program. Click on this link: http://www.titlewish.com/101577 to see and share with others this direct donation opportunity that can help Sanislo’s library thrive. I”m also including ebooks in grant proposals written and in draft proposal…because where there is a will, there’s gotta be a way!

A new before-school student LIT/Library activity club has allowed interested 3rd-5th graders to help in the library from 9-9:35am Monday-Wednesdays. If your student would like to participate in the April cohort, there will be a signup sheet posted next week, March 26th-29th. Only those students who sign up ahead of time will be allowed to participate each month. It’s a great way to start the day. Join us.

Finally, on Wednesday April 11th I will be celebrating “WA Library Snapshot Day” by taking a one day “snapshot” of a day in the life of our library. I invite you to get in the picture supporting the library @ Sanislo.

Last week in the library-lab we were exploring online reading together as we acted to help others. In one week Sanislo students read over 500 books online in the “We Give Books” promotion sponsored by Penguin Books http://www.wegivebooks.org/ . Logged in with my account, their reading in the computer lab contributed 500 books to schools in India via this innovative reading philanthropy program that credits one donation for each book read online. I encourage families to take a look from home, login in and choose to to benefit reading in schools via programs like Todos a Leer (in Jalisco, Mexico) and Room to Read (in Asia and Africa).

If you’re online and interested in what some librarians and reading teachers are talking about, take a look at the “Share a Story, Shape a Future” blog tour postings this week. http://www.share-a-story-shape-a-future.net/ Today’s posting is “The Book Whisperer” by Donalyn Miller, on ways to create a reading culture at home.

Starting Tuesday, February 14th (also known as levy election day and, oh yes, Valentine’s Day) any PTA that has read at least 50 books associated with its registration can win up to 500 books for its school. At the same time, there’s an opportunity to help the Foundation provide books to children in India and Africa. All of the details are available on the website mentioned above. Families are encouraged to spread the word to others, there’s no requirement to be a Sanislo family to benefit our school, so share the information as widely as you will.

Six GRC teams will compete to demonstrate their knowledge of ten selected books. The winning team will represent Sanislo in the March 13th Semi-Final Round at SPL.
