At Sanislo we’ll be celebrating National Poetry Month throughout April. April 1st (no foolin’) we’ll have a visit from Frances McCue, poet and author of a recent book on the life and poetry written by West Seattle’s “own” Richard Hugo. Frances has stories to tell about Hugo’s growing up in the Sanislo neighborhood, and she’ll use them as a springboard to work with a few classes as we kick-off a month of reading, writing and reciting poetry. Along with in-class poetry writing project from Writers in the Schools poet Ann Teplick, a lunchtime poetry cafe option with Read for America teachers Genevieve Mack and Ebony Thompson, our librarian Mr. Seasholes will be featuring poetry in the library and on the web. We’ll be able to assemble a Sanislo poetry anthology by the end of the month worthy of publication and electronic distribution. Mark your calendars for April 29th, when Frances McCue and a Sanislo alumni-poet Aaron Counts will come in to coach student poets in the hours before a 2:30 all school poetry month assembly in the gym.

The Science Fair will be held Thursday, April 28th from 6-8pm, here at Sanislo. Entries can be brought to school on the 27th or 28th and need to be at school no later than 4pm on the 28th. All projects need to be picked up from school by 4pm on Friday the 29th. Information packets with guidelines and ideas will go home with students on April 1. If parents/family members have a job or hobby that involves science/math/technology we hope you will consider setting up a table at the fair to demonstrate how you use these areas in your work. We may also need some parent help with the creation of some project backdrops. If you have questions or ideas, contact Ms. Parkhurst at mkparkhurst@seattleschools.org.

Spring Celebration- Friday, March 25, from 6-8 pm

The Family Engagement Action Team (FEAT) is planning another fun evening of food, music, culture and community. The Spring Celebration is centered on the ideas of rebirth, renewal and regained opportunity.

Thinking about spring reminded us of the annual migration of millions of birds to their familiar nesting grounds. Likewise, all of our families have a story of migration to tell, whether it be ourselves, our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, or even farther back in our ancestry. One of the most wonderful qualities of Sanislo Elementary is the rich diversity of cultures represented by the student body. This year we wish to reflect that diversity in a concrete, personal way.

To better understand or collective experience as a school family, we hope many families will be willing to share their personal stories of immigration, migration, or cultural heritage. Your level of involvement is up to you do decide: it can simply be the placement of a push pin on a giant world map reflecting your family’s place of origin, or you may wish to write down your narrative (or dictate it to me, and I’ll write it down) with accompanying photos, or, if you’re really brave, you may wish to tell your story in person at our family event.

Though we all come from different places and experiences, we share a common goal–that our families thrive and out children learn and grow to be happy, healthy, and productive citizens of the world! So, if you are interested in sharing a spring celebration custom, your family’s migration story, or poetry, music, or any other cultural experience, please contact parent/FEAT member Stephanie Hughes at 206.579.8846 or at hughlog@comcast.net.

Sanislo will celebrate Dr. King’s legacy of work for peace and justice with an assembly at Friday Jan. 21 at 2:30. Each of you is invited to attend that assembly as well as the Family Celebration party that evening. That evening, from 6 until 8 pm, we’re celebrating Dr. Kings legacy at Sanislo with a free barbecue dinner and some performances by our children. These family evenings are always fun and a great way to see everyone together.

Also, if folks are able, the PTA still need volunteers. Please contact Lisa Keith at granolagulch@earthlink.net for more info.

An update on the ruptured water pipe from Principal Seevers & PTA Co-President Gillian Allen-White.

Principal Seevers: The cleanup and repair has begun and classes will begin tomorrow as usual. The first grade classroom will be enclosed and workers will be getting everything dry before putting a new floor covering and new student furniture. The first grade classes will be relocated to the Performance Center for about two weeks while the repairs are finished. People should send encouragement to Ms. Tsuboi and Ms. Ayubi; this is very tough for them.

Also, there have been quite a few books lost, and we plan to get support from the school district to replace the books; however, it’s not uncommon to have a gap between the loss and the coverage. I hope to give the PTA a good idea of what’s needed within a week. If you have questions or hear that others do, please let me know.

PTA President Gillian Allen-White: The PTA will have more information on school water damage needs soon, but for now, the PTA will be accepting donations for book and supply replacements. Please place your donation in the gold box by the front door.
