Help Wanted – Field Day

our PE teacher Luther Bonow is hoping to enlist the services of a few parents to help out with Field Day this year. He can save our school big bucks if someone can pick up equipment and tow it to Sanislo from Merry Makers in Tacoma. The driver needs a vehicle hitch with a standard 2” ball. Equipment can be picked up on Monday, June 21 and taken back the next day. Also needed is a 3000 watt or greater generator to power a piece of inflatable equipment for about 3 ½ hours. If any Sanislo parents can help with these tasks, we won’t have to rent trucks or generators, which means more budget dollars go to equipment and prizes! F.U.N. Volunteers

“Finding Urban Nature” is returning for its spring session at Sanislo, and the 3rd Grade teachers are looking for parents (or other interested adults) to assist in the program. Volunteers come to school for approximately one hour to lead small groups in a fun, hands-on science lesson. Training is provided for the four-week program. Talk with the 3rd Grade teachers or project manager Janelle Shafer (523-8243 or janelles@seattleaudubon.org) to learn more.

The 3rd grade is set to begin with the always popular “Finding Urban Nature” program (FUN)–a great urban environmental learning program sponsored by the Audubon Society–but they don’t have enough volunteers to move forward. Please consider volunteering once a week for 4 weeks in the fall for this great program You don’t have to be a 3rd grade parent to help out! If you can assist, or have questions about the program, please contact Ms. Parkhurst or Ms. O’Connor ASAP.

3rd & 4th grade Classroom Updates

The third grade started F.U.N. (Finding Urban Nature) — a hands-on science program that is sponsored by the Audubon Society. Parents have small groups of children and we use our playground as a place to explore nature. We have F.U.N. every Wednesday from 10:45-11:45. We’ll also have a Spring F.U.N. in March and April. It’s so popular that parents from last year are volunteering again. If that isn’t enough science, the third graders have started a unit about rocks and minerals. Also, we are going to Meany Hall on Friday to see Momix, a dance company that mixes classical ballet, modern dance,
and gymnastics.

4th graders are beginning their third math unit, focusing on gathering, graphing, and interpreting data; on multiplication facts; and map work. We are knee deep in “fat”- continuing our Food Science explorations, examining numerous foods and liquids for fat content. Also, look for students to be publishing some intriguing, sparkling essays, some on a particularly meaningful “life moment,” others on their three favorite foods. They have worked hard through the five steps of the writing process to make great works.

Classroom Updates for October, K-2

Kindergarten – Kindergarteners are adjusting to their school schedules and making friends. Reading has focused on letters; cC, mM and bB and their sounds. Our Sight Word list grows weekly and includes color words. We have begun our Fabric Science Unit. In Math we are working on counting skills, writing numerals and sorting objects by color, shape and size. We have also investigated the concept of patterns.

1st Grade – On September 18, the 1st graders took their annual trip to the Puyallup Fair. Most of the time was spent at the Fair Petting Farm, fishing for trout, and seeing a variety of animals. The 1,075 lb. pumpkin was awesome!

2nd Grade – In Math, we are working on skip counting, sequencing and place value. In Reading, we have started reading groups and expect great progress. We will begin the Balancing and Weighing Science kit and the First Move Chess program by early October.
